Once known as the poor man’s food (in some parts of the world) bananas have moved a long way to secure their position among our favourite fruits.
Experts believe that it was the first food cultivated by humans even before rice. And from the jungles of Southeast Asia, it was spread across the world.
Bananas combine a unique set of vitamins and nutrients that the human body can benefit from. And it does not end with eating them. Their peel can have some practical use as well.
So what is it exactly that bananas have to offer?
- Help to overcome depression. They are rich in tryptophan, which is converted into serotonin also called the hormone of happiness
- They act as a prebiotic, stimulating the growth of friendly bacteria in the bowel.
- Are soothing to the digestive tract and helps restore lost electrolytes after diarrhoea
- Bananas are high in potassium and low in salt. Thanks to that they are able to contribute to lowering blood pressure and protect against heart attack and stroke
- Just two bananas before a workout provide significant energy to your body, sustain your blood sugar and protect against leg cramps.
And also some people say that it can bring relief from itching and irritation after an insect bite. Just rub the bite with the inside of the banana peel. Warning – we haven’t tried this one.
