Avoiding heat exhaustion and heatstroke

It’s a pretty hot summer in England. It’s officially a heatwave!  Staying out in the sun while not drinking enough water can lead to heat exhaustion, which in turn can lead to heat stroke. This is a medical emergency and no laughing matter. It’s really important to take measures to prevent heat exhaustion and heatstroke. There are several things you can do:

  • During the hottest part of the day, say from 11 am – 3 pm, do your best to stay out of the sun
  • If you have to be out and about, wear a hat, sunscreen and walk on the shady side of the street
  • Do NOT leave anyone in a parked car, especially children!!
  • Avoid strenuous exercise
  • Drink plenty of cold water and juices but avoid caffeine and alcohol. No Red Bull!
  • Stick to foods that are fresh and water-rich like fruit and salads
  • A cool shower has the power!
  • Use a facial and body cold water spritzer
  • Keep your environment cool where possible
