In the UK, we eat much more salt than we should. On average, we are consuming about 1,000 mg more than we should every day. Believe it or not, by just cutting out that amount of our daily intake, we can reduce our risk of heart disease by around 10%! Isn’t that a tiny measure for an enormous health improvement? A low-salt diet helps you manage your blood pressure and also results in better energy levels. So how do you avoid too much salt?
– Processed foods are nearly always heavy on salt
– Restaurant foods are nearly always very salty
– Train your tastebuds to expect less salt. Stop salting your eggs for example, and try to taste the natural salt in the egg.
– Avoid salted snacks such as crisps and nuts – they’re high in fat in any case and particularly bad for you.
– Get into herbs, spices and lemon in your cooking instead of too much salt
– Watch soy sauce as this has a very high sodium content
There are many benefits to reducing your salt intake. Salt causes dehydration which in turn can cause tiredness and low energy levels. It also affects concentration. Keep your meals low-salt, drink plenty of fluids and just watch your energy levels grow and grow!
