Winter Survivor’s Guide – Tip No 3 – Eat well!
As the days are shorter and colder we often tend to fall for “winter food”. We choose ‘comforting’, unhealthy meals high in fat, salt and sugar. But should we? One study shows that people in general put on approximately 0.5 kg during winter. It might not seem much, but the study goes on to say that this weight is not lost in spring, and waits for another 0.5 kg next winter.
To trick the winter gain it is important to eat regularly. Once you skip a meal you’re more than likely to make it up with the next one. Make sure that your winter diet is rich in winter fruit and vegetables – full of vitamins and minerals – such as sweet potato, green leafy vegetables, beetroot, kiwi fruit, mandarins, bananas, garlic and ginger. Don’t forget carrots, parsnips and turnips as well, as these can be roasted, mashed or made into a soup.
