World Cancer Day 2014 Approaching: Preventative screening and lifestyle changes are the key
03/02/20147th February is linked with the prevention of cancer around the world. Cancer represents group of diseases that are characterised by uncontrollable growth of cells that create tumours and attack nearby parts of the body.
Cancer can attack any part of the body and its causes are complex and just partially understood by doctors and scientists. That gives a lot of opportunity for myths about cancer to spread. One of them is – there is nothing I can do about cancer.
A healthy lifestyle and regular screening can definitely contribute to prevention of cancer and early detection. Tobacco, alcohol and obesity are known as risk factors. Tobacco for example is held responsible for 71% of lung cancer deaths and 22% of all cancer deaths.
Another myth is that there are no signs and symptoms of cancer. For some of the cancers we do not know early signs and symptoms. But there are many out of total 200 types of cancer that we can detect in early stages. These include breast, cervical, skin, oral and colorectal cancers.
Ultimately, the primary factor that dictates survival rates is early detection. This requires awareness of symptoms and regular preventative screening.
The Harley Street Health Centre strongly believes in early detection and preventative screening.
