Ask Dr Enam Abood: “I’m experiencing problems having an erection. Should I take tablets?”
Our second question comes from a 49-year-old man in Oxford, UK, about erectile dysfunction. One in three men will experience erectile dysfunction, which is a common problem. But as Dr Abood will tell him, it could signify a broader systemic condition.
Question about erection problems:
“I have been married for 5 years, and we’ve had a good sex life until recently when I have had trouble maintaining an erection during sex. I cannot think of anything in particular that has triggered this. I feel otherwise well, although work is stressful and my energy levels are lower than usual. The more it happens, the more anxious I get about it, which makes the problem worse.
My wife is upset about it, and I want a quick fix. A friend has tried Viagra, which he bought from the internet and said it worked for him – is this the best treatment available?”
Answered by Dr Enam Abood:
“Thanks for writing to me. This is a common condition, but it can have multiple causes, so it’s great that you’ve sought advice before starting any kind of treatment. Have you seen a doctor yet? If not, that is the first thing I recommend.
There are a few important factors to exclude if you have erection problems, including the possibility of diabetes or a cardiovascular issue affecting you. You will also need to exclude prostate issues and other urological causes.
You mention you are stressed, and your energy levels are low – take the time to address that, whether through taking a holiday, speaking to your HR manager or line manager or considering counselling. Ensure you sleep well, eat well, and avoid excessive alcohol.
If you are experiencing difficulties in your marriage, consider couples counselling. If you are happy with your marriage, speak to your wife and reassure her that you still love her and find her attractive and that you are seeking support on this issue.
Ultimately, tablets like Viagra are useful when physiological reasons have been excluded, or physiological reasons are non-sinister and ongoing. But make sure:
- you’re well above all else
- the medication is prescribed by a doctor. Don’t risk purchasing medication from online sources.”
