Glandular fever – the secret epidemic?

Harley Street doctor calls for “chronic fatigue” patients to be tested for glandular fever

LondonMarch 2011: A leading Harley Street doctor has called for medical colleagues to review the process of investigation for patients who suffer from tiredness and chronic fatigue.  Dr. Enam Abood, director of the Harley Street Health Centre, has found that around 90% of the chronically tired patients she has tested for Epstein Barr Virus (EBV), the virus that causes glandular fever, return positive results.

She commented: “Although chronic fatigue is a very real health issue, I have found that many tired patients are testing positive for EBV. Typical symptoms are tiredness and fatigue, low energy levels and a general feeling of weakness.  These symptoms usually follow a flu-like episode.  From clinical experience, I recommend that medical colleagues test all patients presenting with tiredness for EBV.”

Infectious mononucleosis, commonly known as glandular fever, is a viral infection, which is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus. The disease is, among other things, characterised by a sore throat, swollen lymph nodes and extreme fatigue.
