We know that vitamin D level is directly linked to the risk of osteoporosis but I am interested to read research that suggests it is also implied in healthy hair growth, cancers, arthritis and degenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.
Clinically, patients with low vitamin D level also present with general aches and pains and an overall lack of wellbeing and energy.
We produce vitamin D when an agent in our skin comes into contact with ultra-violet light and this constitutes the majority of the vitamin D in our system. Some foods also contain vitamin D including catfish, salmon, mackerel, sardines, eel, egg, beef liver and fish oils.
My advice is to test routinely for vitamin D level. If this is low, it can be treated with high concentration oral supplements which are available on prescription from your doctor. It is also worth considering a bone densitometry to check the health of your bones.
